Stockholm City Hall

Stockholm City Hall is one of the world's most recognised buildings and Sweden's most prestigious event venue. Built in 1923 to designs by architect Ragnar Östberg in the National Romantic style, using eight million bricks and featuring one of Europe's most beautiful interiors, it lends an entirely different level of prestige to an event than any other venue in Stockholm.

Companies, organisations and associations can hire the two banquet halls – Blå Hallen (the Blue Hall) and Gyllene Salen (the Golden Hall) – for galas, award ceremonies, concerts, anniversaries and gala dinners. The halls are available from 17:00 to 01:00.

Blå Hallen – the red brick hall whose name refers to Östberg's original intention to paint it blue, a decision he later reversed in favour of keeping the beautiful bare brick – is 1,500 sqm, 50 m long, 30 m wide and 22 m high. It is the home of the Nobel Banquet every 10 December, and the hall that defines the standard for prestige and architecture in Stockholm. Gyllene Salen, at 600 sqm, is clad in 18 million gold mosaic tiles – it is here that the Nobel guests come to dance after dinner in Blå Hallen.

We have produced a large number of galas and ceremonial events at Stockholm City Hall since 2019, including IVA's Annual Ceremonial Meeting – one of Sweden's most distinguished academic events.

What we can offer for your event at Stockholm City Hall

Here we have set out the services we typically offer to clients organising events at Stockholm City Hall.

Sound technology

Blå Hallen has no existing sound system – this is one of the most important practical facts about the venue. The organiser must bring a complete external PA system. Blå Hallen's acoustics are unique and complex: the high brick dome creates natural reflections that require carefully planned speaker placement and delay systems. The City Hall Events team explicitly recommends suppliers with experience of the venue. We have worked in Blå Hallen on several occasions and know what is needed to achieve great sound.

Gyllene Salen has an L-Acoustics system available to hire for simpler requirements. We supplement with wireless microphones, DJ equipment and live band equipment.

Lighting technology

Stockholm City Hall always provides its own lighting rig with house technicians – this is mandatory and included in the booking. The rig is designed to suit the unique environments of Blå Hallen and Gyllene Salen. We always work in close collaboration with the City Hall's lighting technicians and supplement with external lighting for specific scenographic effects.

For Netlight 2019 we synced 100 Astera Titan Tubes and 100 Astera AX3 fixtures with the house rig – 200 individually addressed wireless fixtures that created a dramatic ambient lighting design throughout Blå Hallen. We have also produced exterior projection onto the City Hall's façade.

Video technology

Video solutions in Blå Hallen must be adapted to the hall's dimensions and the cultural heritage requirements. We deliver projectors and projection screens to the north wall (where mounting points are installed), LED screens and video mixers for programme display, award ceremonies and gala presentations.

Décor

Our décor department delivers stages, carpeting, decorations and set designs tailored to the character of Blå Hallen and Gyllene Salen. The stage is limited to a maximum of 90 sqm and we always help with dimensioning and planning a stage solution that maximises functionality within the permitted limits. Blå Hallen's imposing architecture is an asset in itself – a well-planned event often needs little more than ensuring the technology and lighting interact beautifully with the brick vaulting.

Carpentry

Our carpentry workshop produces bespoke solutions adapted to the City Hall's strict cultural heritage requirements – no fixings into walls or floors, no constructions that risk damage to the building. We have produced everything from stage fronts and lecterns to special-purpose installations.

Print

The print department delivers banners, roll-ups, cut-out logos and branding that interact appropriately with the City Hall's historic environment. Given the character of the venue, we are always careful that print solutions enhance rather than conflict with the architecture.

Content & Graphics

For galas and award ceremonies, our content and graphics department produces presentation films, logo animations, award visuals and programme graphics adapted to Blå Hallen's projection surfaces. We ensure all material is delivered in the correct format and resolution.

Project management

Events at Stockholm City Hall require an experienced project manager with detailed venue knowledge and respect for the building's security and cultural heritage requirements. We have produced several events at the City Hall and know its requirements and conditions well. Our project management coordinates EDGE's delivery in close dialogue with the City Hall Events team's own project manager.

Transport & Logistics

Load-in at Stockholm City Hall requires advance booking and coordination with the Events team and security personnel. We always plan transport and logistics well in advance in dialogue with the house team – and with full awareness that the City Hall is a protected building with restricted access.

Concept & Visualisation

Blå Hallen's imposing architecture requires careful visualisation of how stage, lighting and technology interact with the brick vaulting, the columns and the high loggias. We always produce scaled drawings and 3D visualisations showing the finished event in its proper context, and share them with the City Hall Events team for approval ahead of the event.

Pre-programming

Façade projections, complex lighting programmes and synchronised show moments in Blå Hallen are elements that require preparation and pre-programming. At our studio in Sollentuna we can build up the scenario virtually and run through the show sequence – arriving at Stockholm City Hall with a show that is fully ready to run.

Frequently asked questions about events at Stockholm City Hall

What is the difference between Blå Hallen and Gyllene Salen and how are they combined?

Blå Hallen is the City Hall's main brick hall – 1,500 sqm, 22 m high, maximum 1,200 guests at rectangular tables. It is the venue of the Nobel Banquet and Stockholm's most celebrated banquet hall. Gyllene Salen is the gold mosaic hall at 600 sqm with capacity for 700 guests – perfect for dancing, mingling and continuing the evening after dinner in Blå Hallen. Combined, the maximum is 1,200 guests.

Is there an existing sound system in Blå Hallen?

No – Blå Hallen has no existing sound system. This is one of the most important practical facts about the venue: the organiser must bring a complete external PA system. The acoustics are unique and complex, and the City Hall Events team explicitly recommends suppliers with prior experience of the venue. EDGE has worked in Blå Hallen on several occasions and knows the acoustics well.

How does lighting work at Stockholm City Hall?

Stockholm City Hall always provides its own lighting rig with house technicians – this is mandatory and included in the booking. External lighting can supplement. For Netlight 2019 we synced 100 Astera Titan Tubes and 100 Astera AX3 fixtures with the house rig – one of the technically most complex and visually striking lighting deliveries we have made in the venue.

Can projections be made onto the City Hall façade?

Yes. Blå Hallen's north wall has mounting points for a projection screen, and we have produced exterior projections onto the City Hall's façade. For Netlight 2019 we delivered façade projections as part of the complete production. It requires careful planning and coordination with the City Hall Events team's requirements, but the results are spectacular.

How large can a stage be in Blå Hallen?

A stage can be a maximum of 90 sqm combined across Blå Hallen and Gyllene Salen – a restriction the City Hall sets to protect the cultural heritage environment. We always help with stage dimensioning and drawings to maximise functionality within the permitted limits.

What types of events suit Stockholm City Hall?

Stockholm City Hall suits galas, award ceremonies, anniversaries, gala dinners and concerts – events where the venue itself is part of the experience. Choosing the City Hall means choosing one of Sweden's most prestigious addresses. It is not the right venue for trade shows, standard conferences or highly complex stage constructions, given the cultural heritage constraints.

For Netlight 2019 we produced an evening event with 200+ Astera fixtures, façade projections and a nightclub in Gyllene Salen.
