Third year running – and now the full delivery

In late January 2024 we were brought in for the third year running to deliver a solution for Science Week at Södertälje Science Park – a digital society forum hosted by KTH, Scania, AstraZeneca, Södertälje municipality and others to build interest, knowledge and engagement around sustainability.

On behalf of Bonnier News, via Mediaworks and Ronnie Larsson, we delivered both the design and the technology this time around. In previous years our role had been as technical supplier only.

The result was a purpose-built studio environment in the Black Box venue, where our set design team developed a layout with airy wall elements in natural materials, blended with light installations in front of a large brand-inspired backdrop – to give the on-camera backgrounds depth and visual interest.

The technical solution covered, as in previous years, audio tuned for streaming, lighting design for the studio, video and a camera production with Steadicam.

Our delivery

For this project we delivered:
  • Sound

The audio was tuned for streaming from the studio. We delivered a PA system sized for around 200 people on site, wireless microphones for speakers and panellists, and in-ear monitoring for the moderator. A manned audio mix ran throughout the broadcast, supported by a dedicated mic technician keeping an eye on talent backstage.

As a complement we built an intercom solution with producer panel, wired and wireless beltpacks, and extra antenna distribution so crew out in the foyer could also be reached.

In the lounge we rigged a simple recording station with wireless lavalier microphones and a small mixer for podcast and interview formats running alongside the main broadcast.

  • Light

The studio was lit with moving lights as front and back lighting for the stage, mounted in a truss box over the studio floor. LED cans served as back and side lighting, LED bars lit the fabric elements, and LED uplights lifted the wooden panels in the set.

Astera Titan Tubes were integrated into the set as scenographic fixtures, blended into the airy wall elements to give the studio its signature glow and depth.

For the roaming reporter we rigged LED panels on stands – some fixed, some on wheels – so we could follow into different parts of the venue without losing image quality.

  • Video & LED

The video mix ran from a manned mix position in the venue, with preview and delay screens both inside the studio and outside the entrance. PowerPoint and Keynote playback was handled on dedicated machines, and a separate graphics system ran Alpha graphics for name plates and on-screen framing.

Remote speakers were integrated directly into the broadcast via a dedicated technical position, with a technician handling both link feeds and graphics.

An EVS solution made it possible to record from the roaming reporter and run replays live during the broadcast, manned by an EVS operator throughout the production.

The camera production was built around a Flightpack with two PTZ cameras and two studio cameras on pedestal mounts with dollies. Two camera operators ran the system through rehearsal and the live show. For more dynamic shots we added a Steadicam with wireless link, run by a dedicated operator for one day of rehearsal and three broadcast days.

The roaming reporter was kitted out with a fully wireless camera rig with Sennheiser camera microphones, an on-camera light panel and the ability to both record and feed live directly into the studio.

The outgoing stream was set up with both main and backup kit to keep the broadcast running through any network hiccups.

  • Decor & Set Design

Our set design team drew up an airy studio environment where wall elements in natural materials were combined with light installations to give the on-camera backgrounds depth and interest.

The existing stage base in the Black Box was extended by 30 cm to accommodate all interview setups. The stage carpet was laid in dark anthracite and complemented by two cut-out carpet ovals in green and blue that zoned the conversation areas.

The lounge area was set up with five armchairs around a round wood-finish coffee table. Green plants in black pots and on plinths were placed throughout the studio in line with the set design.

  • Carpentry

For the stage extension we built black hard fronts both around the new stage edge and at the existing ramp. On stage we built an LED edge with framing, along with wooden trellis elements per the set design sketch.

We also built a free-standing wooden S-logo with its own base, placed in the studio. Construction drawings for all of the carpentry were produced within the scope of the project.

  • Print

The brand-inspired backdrop behind the studio consisted of a printed banner measuring 3.5 × 21 metres with eyelets along the top and Velcro on the sides and bottom. As a complement, we printed a Dibond front for the free-standing S-logo. Read more about print
  • Content & Graphics

Alpha graphics for name plates and on-screen framing ran throughout the broadcast from a dedicated workstation.

Ahead of the project we also produced the print artwork for the backdrop banner and the S-logo.

  • Concept & Visualisation

Our set design team produced 3D visualisations and stage design sketches that formed the basis of the studio layout. Read more about concept & visualisation
  • Project Management

Delivery and build was coordinated by our project manager Andreas "Adde" Weis. Read more about project management
